Engagement Shoots Aren't As Bad As Your Fiancé Thinks

I must admit that the general reaction among grooms-to-be upon my mentioning engagement shoots is somewhere between a grimace and an eye-twitch. To be honest, I can't really blame them: most guys I know - myself included - feel really awkward in front of a camera and would probably rather spend the hour having a root canal procedure.

I think this sense of dread stems from their belief that they will be made to make fools of themselves in public places. Let me take this opportunity to re-assure you that no-one feels more self-conscious than me in awkward situations like that. Instead, I take the view that engagement shoots are yours - I will be entirely led by your personalities.

Nine times out of ten, when I meet up with a couple for their engagement shoot, the bloke will have a look of grim determination etched on his face; a 'let's get this over with' expression that wouldn't look out of place on its way to the gallows. However, I have always found that as we get going they come to realise that nothing insane is going to happen and that the session can be so relaxed and informal that it barely registers as a photoshoot. In fact, to put his mind at ease, let me address some common concerns:

I Don't Want People Staring At Us!

If you are concerned about people staring, then go ahead and choose somewhere will very little public footfall. This way, the people won't even be there to see you. And even if someone does come along I can just start taking pictures of something else and you can disown me. Problem solved.

It'll Feel Weird Having A Camera In My Face

There is no need for me to be standing three feet from your faces at all times. In fact, I am very fond of wider shots like these. I have always found that once we've got into the groove, couples relax a lot and are happier being photographed from closer in.

But Won't We Have To Kiss?

NO. To me, an engagement shoot is about working with your personalities, not against them. This means not being made to do anything you don't want. That said, if you are comfortable getting a bit more handsy then great.

I'm Just Not That Romantic!

Nothing could possible be less 'romantic' than skeletons riding fairground rides in Blackpool, don't you agree? Everyone is different and engagement shoots should be at true reflection of your personalities and your relationship as a couple. You pick the location and you pick the style. This helps me to better understand who you are as individuals and as a couple, which in turn helps me when photographing your actual wedding.

My Mates Will Tease Me!

Of course they will, they're your mates. That's what they do! If you've followed the pointers given so far then you will have an engagement shoot at a location you want, in a style you want, with no actual logical reason to be embarrassed - in fact, if your mates have got married within the last ten years there is a very good chance that they will have had their own engagement photoshoot too. That's leverage, right there.

To further put your mind at ease, every single guy who has ever had an engagement shoot with me has said that it wasn't as bad as they thought, and some have even enjoyed it. Fancy that.
